Luke 19-21

Jesus's True Family

A circle of clay cups on a worn stone table, arranged as if placed around a center that is empty, warm morning light

His mother and his brothers came, but the crowd made it impossible to reach him. Someone told him, “Your mother and your brothers are outside. They want to see you.” He said, “My mother and my brothers — they are the ones who hear God's word and do it.”

    Culture Family redefined expand_more

In a collectivist culture where family was everything — your identity, your security, your place in the world — Jesus' words are not a gentle expansion of the concept. They are a shock. To say “my mother and brothers are those who hear God's word and do it” is to create an alternative kinship group that competes with blood ties. Ancient listeners would have heard this as either deeply offensive or deeply liberating, depending on where they stood. For those excluded from respectable families — the women of 8:1-3, tax collectors, the marginalized — this is the most radical invitation imaginable.
