Luke 46-49
Two Foundations
“Why do you call me 'Lord, Lord,' and not do what I tell you?
“Everyone who comes to me, hears my words, and acts on them — I'll show you what they're like. They're like a man building a house who dug and kept diggingTextDug and kept digging (ἔσκαψεν καὶ ἐβάθυνεν)Two aorist verbs compressed: he dug and he deepened. Luke emphasizes the labor more than Matthew's version — this is exhausting, deliberate work. The rock (πέτρα) beneath the topsoil is bedrock, not a surface stone. The flood (πλημμύρη) is a wadi flash flood — dry riverbed one moment, a wall of water the next. The contrast is physical: sustained effort vs. sudden catastrophe., down to the rock, and laid his foundation there. When the flood came and the river burst against that house, it could not shake it, because it was well built.
“But the one who hears and does not act is like a man who built a house on the ground without any foundation. The river burst against it, and immediately it collapsed. And the ruin of that house was complete.”

Text The ruin was complete (τὸ ῥῆγμα... μέγα) expand_more
The Greek ῥῆγμα means total collapse — not partial damage, not something repairable. The adjective μέγα (great) intensifies: this is catastrophic, final ruin. The Sermon on the Plain ends not with comfort but with warning. Jesus claims his words are the foundation of reality itself — not Torah, not temple, not tradition, but his words. The christological claim embedded in this parable is enormous.

Life Hearing and doing expand_more
The parable's distinction is not between those who hear and those who don't — both builders hear. The distinction is between hearing and acting. Christian contemplative traditions (from the Desert Fathers through Ignatius and the Quaker meeting) have consistently emphasized that spiritual hearing without corresponding action produces exactly the collapse Jesus describes. James 1:22 echoes the same principle: “Be doers of the word, not hearers only.” The question the parable leaves with every listener is not “Did you hear?” but “What did you do with what you heard?”
