Jesus's Prayer of Joy

In that same moment, Jesus was overcome with joy through the Holy Spirit. “I praise you, Father,” he said — “Lord of heaven and earth — because you have hidden these things from the wise and the educated and revealed them to children. Yes, Father. This was your good pleasure.” Then he said: “Everything has been entrusted to me by my Father. No one knows who the Son is except the FathertranslateTextNo one knows who the Son is except the FatherThis verse stands out in Luke as an extraordinarily high Christological claim — closer in tone to the Gospel of John than to the rest of Luke's narrative. Jesus claims exclusive mutual knowledge between himself and God: a relationship so intimate that only the Father truly knows the Son, and only the Son truly knows the Father. This is not a teacher pointing to God; this is someone claiming to stand in a unique, unrepeatable relationship with God. The claim would have been either deeply compelling or deeply offensive to first-century Jewish listeners — and still is., and no one knows who the Father is except the Son — and anyone the Son chooses to reveal him to.” He turned to his disciples alone. “How privileged you are — seeing what you see. I tell you, many prophets and kings longed to see what you are seeing — and never saw it. They longed to hear what you are hearing — and never heard it.”
